Augmentin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that destroys bacteria. It is used to fight different microorganisms. Usually, this drug is prescribed to the patients with bronchitis, infections of respiratory tract, soft tissues and skin, accumulation of pus, cystitis, urethritis (inflammatory diseases of the urinary canal), peritonitis (abdominal inflammation) and post-operative infections. The other indications for use are venereal diseases and certain kinds of blood infections.
You should note that these drugs are prescribed only after you find out the hypersensitivity of microorganisms (that caused the disease or inflammation) to this drug. Therefore, self-medication is prohibited, especially as each specific case requires individual dosage. If this medicine is recommended for the treatment of the child, you should take some precautions. If the child is less than a year old, buy the medicine only in drops. In case of especially severe diseases, children from 3 months to 12 years are administered the drug intravenously every 6-8 hours calculated at 30 mg per kg of body weight. As for the use of this medicine for the newborns (up to 3 months), take the drug once every 12 hours, then every 8 hours, But don’t use it longer than 2 weeks. After that, the doctor adjusts the treatment according to the clinical situation.
Children from 1 to 12 years old should take suspension or syrup. Children under 2 years are given 2.5 mg of syrup three times a day, under 7 years – 5 ml, from 7 to 12 years – 10 ml. In case of severe infections, the dosage must be increased by 2 times.
Before using this drug, make sure that you don’t take aminoglycoside antibiotics, which lose their effect in such “tandem”. The drug is also incompatible with liquids containing protein and blood products.
The adverse effects of Augmentin include digestive disorders, rarely- liver and gallbladder disorders, urticaria and different allergic reactions. The vein in the place of injection can become inflamed. The development of earlier presented fungal diseases and infection attacks is not excluded.
The drug is contraindicated to the people with hypersensitivity to its components. Patients with liver diseases must be very careful with such drugs. It is not recommended to the pregnant and lactating women.
